Referee Program

Are you passionate about being outdoors, getting some exercise, and earning extra pocket money? High River Minor Soccer is always looking for new referees for all age groups!

We provide Alberta Soccer certified training at no cost, a uniform subsidy, and plenty of opportunities to officiate games. You’ll also earn a competitive fee for each game you referee. It’s a fantastic way for teens to gain work experience while making some extra cash.

- Assistant Referees can start at age 12.
​​​​​​​- Head Referees can start at age 14.

We also encourage adults to get certified to referee the older age groups and help mentor younger referees. Without referees, soccer games can’t happen, so this is a wonderful way to give back to the community.

Course Options

Mini Referee
For those aged 12 or older (on or before May 15th) who want to officiate U9 and younger games. This course includes Assistant Referee training.

The Mini Referee course covers:

-Referee duties and responsibilities

-Rules of Mini Soccer

-On-field practical training

-Basic Offside for Assistant Referees

-Assistant Referee Calls and Signals

Students receive:

-7v7 Rules of Mini Soccer

-Referee badge and whistle

Entry Level Referee
For those aged 14 or older (on or before May 15th) who want to officiate U11 8v8, U13 and older 11v11 games, or act as an Assistant Referee at any level.

This course covers:

-Referee and Assistant Referee duties and responsibilities

-FIFA Laws of the Game (11v11 soccer)

-U11 8v8 Rules of the Game

-On-field practical training

Students receive:

-FIFA Law Book

-U11 8v8 Rule Book

-Referee badge and whistle

-Yellow and red cards, referee wallet

Refresher Course
For existing referees (not Mini Referees), there is a mandatory refresher course before both the outdoor and indoor seasons.

The refresher includes:

-An online quiz

-A 3-hour session (classroom and/or field time)
